St. Jean-Marie Vianney, Cure of Ars - pictures by Cecilia Manguerra Brainard

ST. JEAN-MARIE VIANNEY or THE CURE OF ARS

Do you remember St. Jean-Marie Vianney?  He's the patron saint of parish priests. The following information is from the site Sacred Destinations:

"During his lifetime, St. John Vianney founded an orphanage for girls and became internationally famous for his spiritual direction. He was known for his powerful sermons, personal example of holiness and his ability to perform miracles. He was said to be able to read souls in the confessional and predict future events.

Throughout France there was a saying, "There is a holy man in Ars; go and see him." And people did - between 1830 and 1845 an average of 300 people visited Ars every day to meet with St. John Vianney. He slept only two hours a night so he could serve all the pilgrims, and spent up to 17 hours a day hearing confessions.

The Curé of Ars also ate little, dressed in old clothes and slept on a hard bed. He was said to have been attacked by the Devil regularly, including one famous incident in which the Devil set the saint's bed on fire."

I had the privilege of visiting his home in Dardilly, Lyon, France and the church there. I also visited the Basilica in Ars with his preserved body.

St. Jean-Marie Vianney, pray for us!

Notre Dame the Paris, and Details - Pictures by Cecilia Manguerra Brainard

Notre Dame the Paris, and Details - Pictures by Cecilia Manguerra Brainard
I took these pictures of Notre Dame, showing the back, side, and front, and also close-up of two gargoyles in the back. The side shows the flying buttresses very well.

The building of Notre Dame began in 1160, although construction and reconstruction went on for hundreds of years.

Quote from Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi Quote

"When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants, and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it--always." ~Mahatma Gandhi

Quote by Nikola Tesla

Quote by Nikola Tesla - I love this!

“My brain is only a receiver. In the Universe, there is a core from which we obtain knowledge, strength, inspiration. I have not penetrated into the secrets of this core, but I know it exists.” -Nikola Tesla

Tourist YouTube sites re Glamorous Philippines

I posted two articles that knocked the Philippines, and for balance, I'm posting links to some YouTube clips put out by the Department of Tourism in the Philippines. I know... I know... it's from the Department of Tourism, so these are showing the Philippines glamor sites. But these also exist in the Philippines.

Heiter Cinco de Mayo Celebration - Maryknoll Reunion in Palm Dessert

Heiter Cinco de Mayo Celebration - Maryknoll Reunion in Palm Dessert

Andy and Tina Borja Heiter hosted a Cinco de Mayo celebration in their Palm Dessert home. Present were Tina's college classmates from Maryknoll College, Quezon City: Maria Navarro Ciocon, Lucy Adao McGinley, Med Villanueva, Esther Quintos Parker, Chona Saligumba Preston, Milette Estrada, Marieda Alba Cruz, and Cecilia Manguerra Brainard. Tina's classmate and cousin, Nati and Beverly respectively were present with their husbands Luis and Jan. Some of the "Maryknoll" husbands were present: Patrick McGinley, Owen Parker, Lauren Brainard, Pat Cruz, and  Andy Heiter (the funniest Swiss I've ever met!).

Tina and Andy had traditional Mexican food (for 50 people at least!) and background Mariachi music; and everyone had a great time catching up and bonding. Last year, the Heiters had hosted a luncheon for Tina's Maryknoll classmates as well.

My camera's batteries were low, but I was able to capture some images. For the group photos, I will have to wait for the others to email them, and I will post in this blog entry.

Thank you Tina and Andy, and to all --- great seeing you!
Cecilia
