Thanksgiving Day - A Time to Catch Our Breath

Thanksgiving Day is a big holiday in the US and Canada. In the US it's celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, in Canada on the second Monday in October.

This November 28 my nuclear family will join other members of my husband's family to share in a big meal with turkey, ham, lamb, assorted vegetable and salad dishes. There will be pumpkin pie, pecan pie, leche flan, and other desserts. The children will race about; the grownups will eat and drink and talk and laugh. Someone will organize the gift exchange for Christmas.

Thanksgiving Day signals the beginning of the Christmas season; some households put up their Christmas trees on this day. The Friday after is called Black Friday, because this kicks off the Christmas shopping season. (It's called "black" because vendors start to make money or are in the "black.")

But before the rabid commercialism of the Christmas season begins, there is Thanksgiving Day, a day to catch our breath, to pause, and be grateful.

Instead of dwelling on the tragedies of the world,  this Thanksgiving Day I will remember the people of the world who extended their help to the victims of Haiyan. On a personal basis, I will bless the people who have extended their kindness to me and my family and ask God to shelter them and their families under His wings.

I will not fret over the apocalyptic feeling of recent world events, but will hold in my mind the two words from the Bible: FEAR NOT.

To all my friends, regular readers of this blog, and visitors, I wish you a happy Thanksgiving Day!
