T'nalak Exhibit : The Sacred Weave of the Tbolis.  Walk through a T'nalak forest, and enjoy the sight and feel of fifty handwoven tapestries done by Tboli master weavers of Lake Sebu, Cotabato, Mindanao Island, Philippines. The exhibit begins with a 14- minute documentary, Weaving T'nalak, followed by a touch-and-feel experience of the raw materials from the abaca tree, and then to the looms of t'nalak in various stages of being woven, and finally to rolls of finished products. Curator Fides Enriquez is an independent ethnographer, film documentarian, photographer, producer and explorer. The T’boli textile exhibit, Fu Dalu - The Spirit of the T'nalak  was first presented at Pusod Gallery in Berkeley in 2002, and then on special display at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco in 2005.  Fides has since given talks on T'nalak at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and for the Textile Arts Council at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. In 2012, she produced the award winning documentary, Harana - The Search for the Lost Art Of Serenade, a film about the traditional courtship music of the Philippines. She has also produced Florante Aguilar's original theatrical works Lalawigan - A Tagalog Song Cycle and Aswang - Tales of Philippine Lore. The T'nalak Exhibit will continue until May 31.

50pm Baybayin: Ancient script of Filipinos. A power point presentation by Norman de los Santos. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, Baybayin is an ancient pre-colonial Philippine writing system. It is a member of the Brahmic family of India and is recorded as being in use in the 16th century. It continued to be used during the Spanish colonization of the Philippines up until the late 19th Century. The script is well known because it was carefully documented by Catholic clergy who lived in the Philippines during the colonial era. The term Baybay literally means "to spell" in Tagalog. Modern scripts in the Philippines, descended from Baybayin, are Hanunó'oBuhidTagbanwaand Kapampangan script. Visit his Facebook page: nordenx.blogspot.com

20pm The Filipino as a Writer in America, Authors' Panel Discussion with: Carlene Sobrino Bonnivier, Cecilia Brainard, Giovanni Jose, and Paulino Lim, Jr.

20pm Kulintang: Ancient music and its History will be traced by Ron Quesada of Kulintronica. The ancient gong and drum music of Southern Philippines will enchant you as Ron Quesada demonstrates the varied tones that evolve from the brass gongs and speak to your heart. The underlying theme of his talk is cultural survival through tradition and innovation. He will perform traditional kulintang music and to show his versalility, he will demonstrate how music from an ancient instrument can be blended to create fusion music of the 2lst century. Visit his Facebook page: Ron Quesada.

00pm Arnis: Filipino Martial Arts. A demonstration by Guro Ramses Sison and his students. Filipino martial arts is as diverse as the islands themselves, encompassing over 7,000 of them within the archipelago with over 87 major languages spoken. The names vary widely (kali - escrima –arnis  silat - kuntao - estoque - kaliradman - pagkalikali). The art has evolved from a dance of skills to the art of self-defense. The ancient art existed before the arrival of the Chinese during the T’ang Dynasty in the 9th century. It was outlawed in the 16th century by the King of Spain out of fear that the art would be used against the Spanish regime occupying the Philippines at that time. Its efficiency in combat cost Magellan his life. Encompassing an entire spectrum of weaponry and also featuring sophisticated empty hand concepts, this highly efficient, deadly and combat-proven art enabled the southern Philippines to remain unconquered for almost 400 years.Visit his Facebook page: Sugod Kombatan Arnis.
