Health: Cinnamon Helps Diabetes and High Cholesterol

I didn't know until recently that there are many species of cinnamon. What I was familiar with was cassia cinnamon, which is used as commercial spice. Apparently 90% of what we buy at the market is cassia cinnamon. This is what we sprinkle on our coffee cakes and desserts.

Cinnamon comes from the inner bark of a cinnamon tree; the bark is ground up. This spice has been used for thousands of years.

There are other varieties, including Ceylon cinnamon, which is recommended for medicinal use.  Yes -- cinnamon has many health benefits!  It is famous for lowering blood sugar level and reducing bad LDL cholesterol and triglycerides while raising good HDL. Cinnamon is also good for stomach flu/bug and yeast infections. It is reportedly a cancer-preventor; it eases the pain of arthritis/osteoporosis; and it is even good for the skin and hair.

Cassia cinnamon has coumarin which is toxic when ingested in large quantities, while Ceylon cinnamon has far less coumarin and does not pose any danger.

I add  Ceylon cinnamon to my coffee or tea. It makes the drink taste sweet, even though I haven't actually sweetened it.  I order my Ceylon cinnamon from Amazon.com. There is an herb online site, Mountain Rose Herbs, that I've used.

Remember to choose Ceylon cinnamon if you'll use a lot of it.
