Transforming your Food Passion into Words

On a daily basis, we always deal with food. It inspires us in more ways than one. We cook, we plant, we harvest , we enjoy taking photos and we even write about it! 
To develop each of these interests takes an effort and great joy on the part of any human being. There is pure love and satisfaction in writing! 


The POWER OF PEN was organized back in 2009 with the sole purpose of helping develop one’s skills and transform this passion into words. This 2016, The Power of Pen, a one day Writing Workshop will provide a venue of learning directly from four seasoned and experienced writers and authors who will deliver lectures and allow one to learn how to flow in their writing by understanding the creative process. 
All our speakers are chosen for their wide experiences, their ability to give engaging, inspiring and fresh ideas tailor-fitted to address even the modern technology of this day and age. Our 2016 line up of speakers are:
USING HISTORICAL FACTS FOR FOOD WRITING

FELICE P. STA MARIA
Mrs. Sta. Maria has been an active heritage and cultural development advocate for over 40 years.  Published works have aided her efforts particularly in the realms of cultural education, museum education for civics, and social studies as the entry point for social and human sciences in basic education.
HOW TO TURN YOUR LOVE FOR FOOD INTO ESSAYS & REVIEWS

CECILIA M. BRAINARD
Mrs. Brainard is the author and editor of 19 books, including the award-winning A La Carte Food and Fiction anthology, which won the international Gourmand Award and Best Food Literature Book in 2008.

BRYAN KOH

In 2014, he wrote and co-published his first book, Milk Pigs & Violet Gold, with the Holy Angel University in Angeles City, Pampanga, Philippines, which discusses regional Philippine cuisine. The book has won two prizes, Best Book on Food at both the 33rd National Book Awards and the Pupul ning Banwa awards.
His second book on regional Burmese cuisine, 0451 Mornings are for Mont Hin Gar, is his first to be published by Xochipilli.
BEYOND THE TOQUE: THE CHEF & HIS PEN

GENE GONZALEZ
At the age of 23, he opened, as chef-owner, Cafe Ysabel in San Juan. He is a Chef instructor to the Professional and Recreational courses. Aside from a series of apprenticeships in France and Italy, he has completed various specialized courses in food arts, Culinary Institute of America, California Culinary Academy and the Callebaut Chocolate College. He has undertaken research and development projects with major food manufacturers and flavor laboratories. He is a co-founder of the Alta Cocina Filipina, the movement for contemporary Filipino cuisine. An avid writer, he is editor to a weekly food page for one of Manila’s major newspapers and authored cookbooks including “Cocina Sulipena” a book on 19th century recipes from Pampanga. 
HOW TO BAKE A BOOK: THE COLLABORATIVE WRITING OF PANADERIA - PHILIPPINE BREAD, BISCUIT & BAKERY TRADITIONS

AMY UY
Amy Uy pursues her passion for writing while working for the family’s food business and her own advertising firm. Her work is part of Savor the Word: Ten Years of the Doreen Gamboa Fernandez Food Writing Award (Anvil Publishing, 2012) and she is a co-author of Anvil Publishing's Panaderia: Philippine Bread, Biscuit and Bakery Traditions which spent four months on National Book Store's Bestsellers List for Philippine publications in 2015.

JENNY ORILLIOS

Jenny Orillos attended the first Power of Pen workshop in 2009.  She completed her Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing at the De La Salle University. She also co-authored the writing guide, Leaping Off the Page: How to Write Better Descriptions. She is an awardee of the Doreen Fernandez Food Writing Award in 2008 and 2011 (second prize) and 2014 (first prize).  Her food essays were published in Savor the Word (Anvil, 2012). Her latest book is Proof: The Philippine Baker’s Guide, a technical baking book published by the Philippine Society of Baking as part of its 10th anniversary.
