Reminiscing with the De Vries at Le Petit Cafe in Santa Monica, California

We had dinner with our friends, Carol and John De Vries, whom we have known for many years. Our sons went to school together and were/are good friends. Chris (our son) and Kevin (their son) had many escapades which we recounted over dinner.


For examples:

1.  At the age of around 12, these two were hooked on video games. One day, Carol gave Kevin money for a haircut at a barbershop near our houses. Later that day, Carol noticed that Kevin's haircut was terrible. She brought him to the barbershop to complain. Before they got in, he made a last minute confession that Chris had cut his hair and they had spent the money on video games.

2. Kevin was spending the night at our home. It was summer and the boys decided to sleep outside in a tent. Late at night. our phone rang; it was a cop asking if we knew were our son was. "Outside," we replied. He told us to check.  There were no boys in the tent. The two had decided to go out into the night, in camouflage clothes and toy guns, and were creeping about, pretending they were soldiers -- this would be very dangerous nowadays!

3. On graduation day, they opened a bottle of "stink bomb" in the auditorium.

On and on the stories went. The boys are now men, and nice men they are. They continue to surf together, sometimes traveling to Hawaii to do so.

Changing the topic, we ate at Le Petit Cafe at 2841 Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica, California.

We've eaten at this French restaurant before and enjoy its cozy atmosphere. Their menu includes onion soup, escargot, salads, filet mignon, salmon, trout, duck, and crab cakes. I had escargot and crab cakes and these were fine. The others had filet mignon and salmon and they enjoyed their dinner as well.

To be honest the food at Le Petit Cafe is not spectacular but it's good in a solid sort of way. Service is good, ambiance is fine, and the overall experience of eating there is pleasant. I would rate the restaurant 4 stars.

The restaurant is small and popular; it's a good idea to make reservations before going there.
