We like the deli sandwiches at Bay Cities Italian Deli and Bakery at 1517 Lincoln Boulevard in Santa Monica. I get their "Godmother" which has Genoa Salami, Mortadella Cappacola, Ham and Prosciutto plus Provolone with a piquant dressing. They have other sandwiches or you can ask them to make what you want.
The place is very popular especially during lunchtime and parking is not the best, so get there before the noon crowd arrives. It's take-out, but there are tables and benches outside for an informal lunch.
Bay Cities is also a market and bakery. You can buy fresh bread, cheeses, and meats, if you prefer. They also have a section with ready-cooked food like lasagna and so on. There are specialty Italian items in cans and packages for your home cooking.
I'm going to add that they have some staff members who are rude. Perhaps they're busy and harassed but those really aren't excuses. Management should teach their workers to be polite to their customers.
