Today I'm sharing two links about the Philippines. The first one is a link to a video about the History of Cebu, an island in Southern Philippines.
I was born and raised in Cebu, so I was interested in this video. I'm including a Philippine map so you can see where Cebu is; it's the sock-shaped island in the central part of the archipelago (red in color in this Wikipedia map). The picture above is from the Boxer Codex showing Pinatados, or tattooed warriors from Cebu, Bohol, and Leyte. The elaborateness of the tattoos indicated the bravery of the warriors.
Women also had tattoos, for decorative purposes, and they appeared more like lace on their hands and other parts of their body.

The link below leads you to a brief article about the standardization of Filipino Family Names by the Spaniards back in 1849. It's also very interesting. Note that not ALL Filipinos acquired family names at this time. Claveria's decree was for those who did not have surnames, since pre-Hispanic Filipinos did not necessarily have family names.
