Syria: Raqqa Syrian Journalists Killed
I have been following news about the RBSS (Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently), a citizen's group that has been reporting on life in ISIL-occupied Raqqa, Syria. RBSS is just about the only source for reliable news in the area. For instance RBSS reported about the failed US Special Forces raid to save American journalist James Foley and other hostages; RBSS also covered news about the Jordanian pilot who was burned to death by ISIL.
In retaliation, ISIL has been liquidating RBSS members, calling them spies. A month after RBSS began their work, Al-Moutaz Bellah Ibrahim was kidnapped and killed by ISIL. On October 30, 2015, Ibrahim Abdul Kader and his friend Fares Hammadi were stabbed and beheaded in Urfa, Turkey. On December 16, 2015, Ahmad Mohammed Al Mousa was murdered in Idlib, Syria.

Email your US Legislators to Preserve Syrian Refugee Program in the US.
Write your legislators to support continuing the refugee program that promises refuge to 10,000 Syrians, mostly women and children who are escaping violence in their home country.
Know that all refugee applicants to the US will be vetted very, very carefully.
Remember that 10,000 refugees is a drop in the bucket given millions of them have been driven from their homes.

The Syrian Passport Found at the Paris Attacks #Paris #parisattacks
I grabbed this image from the Syrilution Creative Arts.
The picture ridicules the imperishable Syrian passport found near the body of one of the Paris suicide bombers at the Stade de France. Other similar cartoons raise the question of how a suicide bomber could even think to bring his passport with him. The thinking is that the presence of the passport was deliberate.

Review: Salam Neighbor, Documentary on Syrian Refugees #refugeecrisis, #syriawar

We saw the premier Los Angeles showing of Salam Neighbor, a documentary film by Zach Ingrasci and Chris Temple.
Zach and Chris had done the award-winning film, Living on One Dollar a Day, which documents the resourcefulness of people in rural Guatemala who lived on a dollar a day. In Salam Neighbor, the two young filmmakers went to Jordan's Za'atari refugee camp and lived with 85,000 displaced Syrian refugees for a month.

Syrian War and Doomsday Seed Bank
This news item sounds very futuristic, only it's happening now:
"Doomsday Vault" Request: Scientists Seek over 100,000 seed samples from Arctic Bank for Middle East
"A Lebanon-based seed bank formerly located in war-torn Syria has requested 116,000 crop samples from an international “doomsday vault” in Svalbard to re-establish the collection elsewhere. It is the first such request since the facility opened in 2008.
Forced from its research farm in Aleppo in 2012, the International Centre for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas’ (ICARDA), which provides seed stock for dry Middle Eastern countries, wants almost 130 boxes of seed samples out of the 325 it had deposited in the vault in recent years." - quote from Reuters, 9/22/15

Middle East: Syrian and Turkish Wedding Couples to Remember
Here are two touching stories that have been circulating in the internet. First is the news about the Syrian couple who got married in bombed-out St. George Church in Homs, Syria - see picture above.

Middle East: A Layperson's View of Turkey's Bombing ISIL and Kurdish Targets
Just when I think things can't get worse in the Middle East, it does.
Now Turkey, which had/has been allowing safe passage to ISIL and did nothing while the Battle of Kobani went on, does a turnaround and is bombing ISIL targets and Kurdish targets in Northern Iraq.
I'm fairly certain that the US made some deal with Turkey to be able to use their bases but that the US did not count on Turkey bombing the Kurds who have been the "boots on the ground" to fight ISIL.
If you ask me what I think, I would say the US should not trust Erdogan. I remember how he promised to help when the situation in Kobani was critical but did nothing. In fact, Turkey blocked the entry point between Turkey and Kobani, trapping people in Kobani. Erdogan also forced Joe Biden to apologize when Biden had said the truth that Turkey was being used as the entry point of ISIL jihadists to Syria.
While this complicated dance goes on, people are dying, people are displaced, and peace remains elusive.
