Lucy Urgello Miller's Glimpses of Old Cebu

One of the writers honored at Philippine Expressions' 2017 Pinay Gathering was Lucy Urgello Miller who authored the coffee table book, Glimpses of Old Cebu.  Her book collects vintage postcards, and one of the postcards is that of my mother, Concepcion Cuenco when she was a young Carnival Queen.

Here are some pictures and an excerpt of a Freeman Article about Lucy's book.

Sex and Crime in Cebu, Philippines: The Fuente Osmena Murders

I watched The Galapagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden, about unsolved crimes in the Galapagos in 1934, and I was reminded of Cebu's own murder mystery referred to as the Fuente Osmena Murders.

This sensational event happened in 1915, and involved the murders of two people, Ramon Santiago and Natividad Garcia Reyes.  Just like the Galapagos Affair, this case involved sex: it was said that Ramon Santiago was having an affair with a married woman, Natividad Garcia Reyes.

True Story: The Ghost of Ermita, Manila, by Lucy Urgello Miller

Lucy Urgello Miller

Before Christmas I had a lively discussion with some people about ghosts and I had a couple of blog entries about that subject matter. Lucy Urgello Miller had mentioned that she had a ghost encounter when she lived in Ermita, Manila. I told her that my family had a house in nearby Malate in Manila, where we also had a ghost, a St. Paul nun. After World War II, my parents returned to their house in Manila, which was, along with the rest of bombed Manila, in ruins. The decomposed body of a Paulist nun was found stuffed in a barrel, a victim of the war. They buried her where they found her, in the yard. Many people, including our servants and my own brother, saw her ghost flitting by windows or near the area where she was buried.  Whenever she was seen, my mother used to race over to church to have Masses for the dead said for her.

I asked Lucy if she wanted to write down her ghost experience and she did. It is published in this blog with ther permission.  Thank you for sharing, Lucy ~ Cecilia

Thinking of Mama, Concepcion Cuenco Manguerra, Cebu Carnival Queen 1931

My Mother, Concepcion Cuenco Manguerra, was Cebu's Carnival Queen in 1931. The top picture is part of Lucy Miller's coffee table book, Glimpses of Old Cebu.

I saw this picture only when I got a copy of Lucy's book. Many of Mama's old photos were destroyed during World War II.  The few pictures I have came from other people who knew her.
