Mississippi River Cruise - New Orleans 3

Here are pictures taken at the French Quarter of New Orleans before we started our Mississippi River Cruise.

New Orleans, or more precisely Louisiana, is interesting because it belonged to the French, then passed on the Spanish, then back to the French again, before ending up with the Americans.

The Spanish connection brought the first Filipino settlers to Louisiana. They were galleon sailors who jumped ship in around 1763. They married Cajun women and fished and did shrimping. They were called the Manilamen.

Years ago, I interviewed Marina Espina about the Manilamen. This was not widely known then. To my surprise, our tour guide Ina actually talked about them.

The pictures show St. Louis Cathedral, the famous beignet place Cafe Du Monde, and other sites in the French Quarter.
