In Amsterdam, we did a canal cruise. One of my advocacies is cleaning up rivers in Cebu, Philippines. The canals and rivers are chock-full of garbage there. When I see clean and beautiful canals in other places, like Amsterdam for instance, I feel sad about the rivers and canals in the Philippines and hope that people will stop throwing garbage in the waterways, and and the government will do more to clean up the Philippine rivers.
I digress because this blog entry is about Amsterdam.
Amsterdam has numerous canals and locks. The low countries of Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg use locks, dikes and pumps to hold back the sea. The locks serve as gates or walls, so to speak, to separate land from sea.
Amsterdam is like a basin with surrounding locks that keep the bottom of the basin dry. It's amazing to think that these countries have been fighting with the sea for centuries. So much energy and wealth go into keeping the below sea-level areas dry. I'll be blogging about other places, so come back and visit.
