Santa Monica, California: Rae's Restaurant and Diner

Rae's Restaurant is located on 2901 Pico Blvd, Santa Monica, CA, with 4-star ratings inYelp and Tripadvisor -- not too bad for a humble diner like this one. Movie fans will be interested to know that this diner has been used as the setting for many films, including Starksy and Hutch, Not Another Teen Movie, The Next Best Thing, and more.

My family and I have been frequenting Rae's for years. One of the family jokes is when the waitress came along and seemingly asked if we wanted, "Super salad?" and our son said, "Yes."  She repeated the question three times, until we realized she was saying, "Soup or salad.?"

The workers at Rae's stay for decades; and at some point I heard the original owner of Rae's had set it up so it's a cooperative for the workers.  I don't know this for a fact, however.

It's not a fancy place, but it's typically American, and a good place for breakfast: pancakes, waffles, eggs, bacon, sausage, that sort of thing. They have more sinful breakfasts with rich gravy -- high cholesterol heart-stoppers.

Rae's is a Santa Monica institution and in fact was mentioned recently in an article entitled, "The Best Diners in Los Angeles." I quote from that article:

Rae's Restaurant: This is an old-school diner with old-school prices. It's your typical greasy-spoon, but we're especially big fans of the biscuits and gravy. You might recognize it from one of its many appearances in the movies. But be warned: it's a tiny space (and so is the parking lot), so the line can get long on the weekends. —Emma Gallegos

Note that Rae's is not open for dinner; they serve breakfast and lunch.
