HOTP Literary Readings by Filipino & Filipino American Authors at #FilAmBookFest

Travelling from as far as England and the Philippines, Filipino and Filipino American Authors will gather in San Francisco, California for the Filipino American International Book Festival on October 12 and 13, 2019.

Two Hot Off the Press Literary Readings at the festival will feature twenty writers of new books. The HOTP readings will be held at the Koret Auditorium of the San Francisco Main Public Library, 100 Larkin Street, San Francisco, CA 94120, on Saturday October 12, 2019 at 12:45 and 4 p.m.

The readings will include an interesting mix of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction, including cookbooks. Many of the writers have authored prior books and are known in international literary communities.

The first HOTP reading at 12:45 p.m. features: Walter Ang (Barangay to Broadway: Filipino American Theater History); Elizabeth Ann Besa-Quirino (Instant Filipino Recipes: My Mother’s Traditional Philippine Food in a Multicooker Pot and My Mother’s Philippine Recipes; Cecilia Brainard (Melisande in Paris and When the Rainbow Goddess Wept); Aileen Cassinetto (The Pink House of Purple Yam Preserves and Speak Poetry Anthology, Volume 1); Cindy Fazzi (My MacArthur), Elmer Omar Bascos Pizo (Leaving Shadow Behind Us); Grace Talusan (The Body Papers) ; Criselda Yabes (Broken Islands and Crying Mountain); Alfred A. Yuson (The Music Child & the Mahjong Queen), and EJR David.

The second HOTP reading at 4 p.m. features: Arlene Biala (one-inch punch); Jaqueline Chio-Lauri (The New Filipino Kitchen, Stories and Recipes from Around the Globe); Rin Chupeco (The Shadowglass); Melinda Luisa de Jesus (peminology); Angelo R. Lacuesta (Stay: 21 Comic Stories and Coral Cove and Other Stories); Ricco Siasoco (The Foley Artist); Leny Strobel (Glimpses: A Memoir); and Rick Rocamora.

Moderated by Cecilia Brainard, this is the fifth year, Hot Off the Press Literary Readings will showcase authors with new publications. HOTP readings draw a wide audience from those who enjoy poetry and literary readings. HOTP readings are free and open to the public.

Cecilia Manguerra Brainard

Cecilia Manguerra Brainard's official website is ceciliabrainarddotcom. She is the award-winning author and editor of 22 books, including When the Rainbow Goddess Wept, The Newspaper Widow, Magdalena, Selected Stories, Vigan and Other Stories, and more. She edited Growing Up Filipino 1, 2, & 3, Fiction by Filipinos in America, Contemporary Fiction by Filipinos in America, and other books.. Her work has been translated into Finnish and Turkish; and many of her stories and articles have been widely anthologized. Cecilia has received many awards, including a California Arts Council Fellowship in Fiction, a Brody Arts Fund Award, a Special Recognition Award for her work dealing with Asian American youths, as well as a Certificate of Recognition from the California State Senate, 21st District, and the Outstanding Individual Award from her birth city, Cebu, Philippines. She has lectured and performed at UCLA, USC, University of Connecticut, University of the Philippines, PEN, Shakespeare & Company in Paris, and many others. She has served in the Board of literary arts groups such as PEN, PAWWA (Pacific Asian American Writers West), among others.
