Someone had recommended Mama's Fish House and we decided to check it out. Mama's Fish House is a sprawling restaurant near the seashore. It's a highend place with valet parking, Hawaiian decor, and fabulous views of a beautiful cove.
It was 5:30 p.m. Thursday when we entered Mama's Fish House and it was already crowded (with tourists mostly). Since we didn't have reservations we had a 40-minute wait and we did this at the bar. I ordered a margarita, which I'm sorry to report had more ice than margarita. My husband ordered an amber beer but got lager.
We were seated in an overflow section without ocean view, but the room was pleasant enough. The waitress was efficient. She immediately served us their homemade bread, which tasted like sweet wholegrain Hawaiian bread. The menu had a variety of choices but we chose their signature dish, mahi-mahi stuffed with crab and lobster and coated with macadamia nuts. This was a good choice. The salad, however, was mediocre - a few romaine leaves, long strips of croutons, and scant dressing.
What Mama's Fish House primarily offers is the proverbial "ambiance." The food wasn't outstanding, and prices were somewhat steep, with main dishes in the $48 range and salads at $18. But to be fair, we enjoyed our dinner and I rate the restaurant 3.5-4 stars.
