It's Labor Day Weekend, a holiday weekend in the US. This means that a lot of people are on vacation, and there will be a lot of barbecuing, partying, swimming, etc.
Here's a bit of information about Labor Day: it's an annual workers' holiday on the first Monday in September, first organized by the Central Labor Union of New York in 1882.
After Labor Day, even if the weather is hot (as in California), stores start their Fall and Halloween themes. In other words, this weekend signals the end of summer and the beginning of fall in the US.
